I was just curious. Is there a way to use avi fomat in Sony Vegas? Because whenever I download movies or shows they are usually in avi format and it takes forever to convert the format to wmv and sometimes after I convert it the words are not on track when they are spoken. So it's kind of annoying. Anyways, if you know how to use avi format in Sony Vegas I'd really appreciate it if you told me how to do so.

You're apparently supposed to have a codec pack for it, but I have yet to find one that actually works.

Hmm, I didn't know that. I guess I'll look around to see if I find anything that works. And if I do I'll let you know.

I've made a few vids in Vegas and never had trouble with AVI. I converted my DVD rip to AVI with DV compression. The kinds of AVI files you're using are XviD or DivX. XviD or DivX AVI are not supported by Vegas. Here's a Creative Cow discussion thread where John Rofrano (Vegas guru who works for Vaast.com, who make a lot of professional DVD tutorials for Vegas) says: "Vegas does not support editing DivX. Do not convert your files to DivX for use with Vegas. Use MJPEG, Huffyuv, Lagarith, DV, anything but DivX or XVid." forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/913162

AVI isn't a format. It's a container. Many different types of codecs (compression) can be in an AVI file. I edit AVI files in Sony Vegas without the K-Lite codec pack, because I use DV compression. DV is a very widely accepted codec for editing. The quality is great, and editing is very smooth. The reason you guys are always having problems with "AVI" files is because you are using AVI files with codec that is not supported by Vegas. XviD and DivX are what you are probably using. Sony has stated that they don't support these codecs. Vegas gurus (the guys who write the manuals and how-to books on Vegas) have said that it doesn't support XviD and DivX. I just quoted one of these Vegas gurus, who said just that, in my previous post. Sony Vegas supports AVI files, and it always has. It doesn't support all codecs used within AVI. When all you ever try to edit with in Vegas are AVI files with unsupported codecs, it doesn't always work. (Or if it does work, it doesn't always work well.) Other problems like freezing, crashing, and bad quality can be a result. A lot of problems vidders complain about with Vegas, how it's unstable or acting funny—it's due to using an unsupported codec. There is plenty of documentation out there, from official sources, to back this up. But, do whatever you want! If you start to have problems, the reason and solution for the problems have been given to you.
